The 7th Annual Turkish Canadian Youth Congress was held on March 15 at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario. The Youth Congress’s principal organizer is the Council of Turkish Canadians (CTC). For the fifth year in a row, TCA has been a sponsor of CTC forums. The Modern Turkish Studies Initiative at Carleton University and the Federation of Canadian Turkish Associations also supported this year’s event.
Over 700 young Turkish Canadians have participated in the annual youth conferences thus far and this year’s congress attracted 75 participants. Providing a platform for young Turkish Canadians to meet each other and network, the congress’ primary aim is to be a forum for understanding Turkish heritage and history, provide guidance for young Turkish Canadians to make effective contributions to Canada, and offer tools and information necessary to address and resolve issues important to Turkish Canadians. TCA President G. Lincoln McCurdy was among the speakers of the congress and spoke on a panel entitled “Action Plan for Future—What is Next for Youth Advocacy?” McCurdy shared the panel with Belit Onay, a German politician of Turkish origin, who is a member of the Lower Saxon Parliament, Germany, representing the Alliance 90/The Greens Party.
“TCA congratulates the organizers of this important forum. We are delighted to support such endeavors that motivate young Turkish Canadians and Turkish Americans alike to pursue a career in public life,” said McCurdy.
