Humanitarian Grants

TCA has awarded grants for humanitarian relief purposes to organizations to help alleviate suffering and to deepen friendship, understanding and cooperation between the Turkish American community and other heritage communities in the United States.

Syrian Refugees Grant

The Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) distributed $100,000 in humanitarian grants to Syrian refugees in Turkey, marking the conclusion of TCA’s Syrian Refugee Matching Campaign launched in the summer of 2016. Humanitarian grants were given to fund specific project requests from local organizations working directly with refugees on the ground in Turkey including: Refugee Volunteers of Izmir (ReVi), Butun Cocuklar Bizim Dernegi (All Children Are Ours Foundation), and Sureli Destek (Periodic Support).

With the TCA grant, Butun Cocuklar Bizim Dernegi and Sureli Destek provided winter clothing and boots to over 1,000 children in Batman and the Fatih, Okmeydani, and Kucukcekmece districts of Istanbul. They also provided refugee families with food, hygiene products, school supplies, heating supplies, and transportation support to refugee families.

Mexican Red Cross Grant

Mexico was hit with one of its worst national disasters in November 2007 when the state of Tabasco was hit by a hurricane, causing massive flooding and the destruction of tens of thousands of homes, schools, as well as the state's crops. TCA donated two fully equipped ambulances, worth $ 200,000, to the Mexican Red Cross to be used in the southeastern Mexican state of Tabasco.

Chaldean Federation Grant

In an effort to alleviate the suffering of thousands of Iraq's war torn and displaced Chaldean refugees in Turkey, in 2009 TCA pledged a $ 100,000 humanitarian grant to the Chaldean Federation of America (CFA). Under this humanitarian program, administered jointly with the Istanbul-based Turkish Chaldean-Assyrian-Syriac Humanitarian Organization (KASDER), humanitarian aid, particularly food and medicine, is provided to Christian refugees from Iraq who live in Turkey.

Haiti Earthquake Relief Grant

In August 2010, TCA donated $50,000 to Haiti relief efforts to be distributed by Cross International, a charity located in Pompano Beach, and Operation Helping Hands, a charitable partnership between the United Way of Miami-Dade and The Miami Herald / el Nuevo Herald. The funds will be used to support rebuilding of schools and other infrastructure. Another $ 50,000 was donated to Operation Helping Hands in February 2011.

Typhoon Haiyan Relief Efforts in the Philippines Grants

In 2014, TCA in collaboration with the Turkish Philanthropy Funds sponsored a national Turkish American donation drive and donated $100,000 to help with the Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts after the typhoon hit the Philippines in November 2013.  Four $25,000 grants were given to Filipino American organizations in the United States—the Philippine Cultural Foundation of Maryland, March 7; the Filipino Community Center in Waipahu, Hawaii, March 20; the Filipino Community of Seattle, April 23; and the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce Texas, July 1.

Bosnia Aid Grant

In September 2014, TCA provided a major humanitarian grant of $100,000 to the Marshall Legacy Institute (MLI) to aid flood relief and demining programs in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). The TCA grant aimed to help BiH recover from devastating floods that not only caused substantial damage throughout much of the country, but also caused serious setbacks in demining efforts by displacing countless land mines and washing away mine warning signs. TCA's donation was matched by the U.S. State Department.
