TCA Hosts Cuneyt Ozdemir of CNN Turk in Washington

On January 19, TCA hosted Cuneyt Ozdemir of CNN Turk at its offices in Washington to discuss the Presidential Inauguration, U.S.-Turkey relations under the Trump administration, TCA's work on Capitol Hill, and TCA activities and programs. TCA President G. Lincoln McCurdy was also featured in Cuneyt Ozdemir’s weekly CNN Turk program on the inauguration.  

TCA Attends Congressional Swearing-In Celebrations

On January 3, TCA representatives attended receptions and open-houses held to celebrate the Congressional swearing-in for the following members of Congress: Turkey Caucus Co-Chairs Reps. Steve Chabot (R-OH/1st) and Pete Sessions (R-TX/32nd); Turkey Caucus members Reps. Yvette Clarke (D-NY/9th), Doug Collins (R-GA/7th), James Comer (R-KY/1st), Barbara Comstock (R-VA/10th), Sean Duffy (R-WI/7th), Tom Emmer (R-MN/6th), Garret Graves (R-LA/6th), Richard Hudson (R-NC/8th), Adam Kinzinger (R-IL/16th), Tom MacArthur (R-NJ/3rd), Alex Mooney (R-WV/2nd), David Rouzer (R-NC/7th), and Ryan Zinke (R-MT/AL); and Reps. Alma Adams (D-NC/12th), Don Bacon (R-NE/2nd), Ryan Costello (R-PA/6th), Tom Garrett (R-VA/5th), Trey Hollingsworth (D-IN/9th), David Kustoff (R-TN/8th), Doug LaMalfa (R-CA/1st),), Jimmy Panetta (D-CA/20th), Jared Polis (D-CO/2nd).

Congresswoman Virginia Foxx Steps Down as Turkey Caucus Co-Chair

Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC/5th) has stepped down from her role as Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on U.S.-Turkey Relations and Turkish Americans following her appointment as Chairwoman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce . Rep. Foxx will continue to remain an active member of the Turkey Caucus. TCA would like to thank Rep. Foxx for her work on her behalf of Turkey and Turkish Americans and her dedication to a strong U.S.-Turkey relationship.

Congressman Steve Chabot Named New Turkey Caucus Co-Chair

Rep. Steve Chabot (R-OH/1st) has been named the new Republican Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on U.S.-Turkey Relations and Turkish Americans along with. Rep. Chabot also serves as Chairman of the House Small Business Committee . TCA looks forward to working closely with Rep. Chabot along with Reps. Steve Cohen (D-TN/9th) , Gerry Connolly (D-VA/11th) , and Pete Sessions (R-TX/32nd) .  

TCA and Turkish Americans Meet with Maryland Delegate Kris Valderrama

On January 9, members of the Maryland American Turkish Association (MATA) American Turkish Association of Washington DC (ATA-DC) , and TCA representatives met with Maryland General Assembly Delegate Kriselda Valderrama in Annapolis, Maryland. They also spoke with Maryland State Senator Brian Feldman at the event. Delegate Valderrama, who is Filipino American, is interested in Turkish American issues and building bridges between the Filipino and Turkish communities. 

Bahcesehir University American Studies Center Visits Washington

On January 23, TCA hosted a meeting with students from the American Studies Center at Bahcesehir University in Istanbul as part of the group’s visit to Washington, DC. TCA gave presentations and answered questions about the U.S. government, civic engagement, congressional caucuses, and TCA programs and activities. TCA accompanied the students on a tour of the U.S. Capitol and facilitated meetings on Capitol Hill with staff members of Turkey Caucus Co-Chairs Congressmen Gerry Connolly (D-VA/11th) and Pete Sessions (R-TX/32nd) .

Turkish Americans to Attend Canadian Youth Congress

In January, TCA accepted applications from promising young Turkish Americans to attend the Council of Turkish Canadians (CTC) 9th Annual Turkish-Canadian Youth Congress, to be held February 10-12, 2017 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. This marks the first time Turkish American youth will attend the Turkish Canadian Youth Congress. During the conference, Canadian and American youth will have the opportunity to learn about the Turkish communities in both countries and work together to develop international networks with their peers in Canada. Participants will learn about the Canadian political system, meet leaders in the Turkish Canadian community, share their own experiences as members of the Turkish American community, and develop leadership skills.  

TCA 2017 Washington Summer Internship Program Applications Due

Applications for the tenth annual TCA Washington Summer Internship Program were due on Friday, January 27. The TCA Internship Program is open to currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students and recent graduates of Turkish American heritage. It provides an opportunity for Turkish American collegiate students and recent graduates to work in Washington, DC for congressional offices and non-governmental organizations. This program is designed to enhance the participation of young Turkish Americans in public affairs and contribute to preparing future Turkish American political and community leaders. Since the program began in 2007, 162 internship opportunities have been provided to Turkish Americans from throughout the country.
