TCA Provides Grant for ACBH (Advisory Council for Bosnia and Herzegovina) Delegation Washington, DC Visit

TCA provided a $5,000 grant to the Advisory Council for Bosnia and Herzegovina (ACBH) to support an ACBH delegation visit from Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) to the United States. The delegation, which visited Washington, DC April 18-24, 2016, was comprised of Munira Subasic, President of the Mother’s Action of the Srebrenica and Zepa Enclaves; Murat Tahirovic, President of the Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide; and Elmina Kulasic, Senior Advisor at the Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide. TCA’s grant is part of an ongoing partnership between TCA and ACBH in support of strengthening ties between the Turkish and Bosnian American communities.

TCA Attends Annual US Association of Former Members of Congress Statesmanship Awards Dinner

TCA President G. Lincoln McCurdy attended the US Association of Former Members of Congress (USAFMC) 2016 Statesmanship Awards Dinner at the historic Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium. The theme of the night was Recognizing Those who Support our Nation’s Heroes. USAFMC’s 2016 Statesmanship Award was presented to Senator Max Cleland, who served his country in uniform and returned from Vietnam a highly decorated and severely wounded veteran.

TCA President Visits New Mexico

TCA President G. Lincoln McCurdy visited the Institute of American Indian Art (IAIA) in Santa Fe, NM and the University of New Mexico in Albequerque, NM to discuss TCA’s Study Abroad Scholarships for American Students of Minority and Heritage Communities. During his visit, G. Lincoln McCurdy met with IAIA President, Dr. Robert Martin and Dr. David Wright, Associate Director of the Education Abroad Global Education Office at the University of New Mexico. TCA’s Study Abroad Scholarships are designed to expand study abroad opportunities to those communities who are largely underrepresented in study abroad programs.

TCA President Travels to Southern California

During his visit to California, TCA President G. Lincoln McCurdy addressed members of the American Turkish Association of Southern California at the Sofitel Hotel in Los Angeles about the political landscape in Washington and the importance of grassroots activism. He also spoke with Turkish Consul General in Los Angles Gulru Sezer and met with representatives of the Turkish American community in Irvine, CA.

TCA President Visits Chukchansi Tribe in Coarsegold, CA

TCA President G. Lincoln McCurdy traveled to Coarsegold, CA to meet with the Chukchansi Tribal Council, where they discussed business and cultural projects between the Chukchansi Tribe and Turkey.

TCA Scholarship Program for Students of Minority and Heritage Communities

Nine students were selected as recipients of the TCA Study Abroad Scholarships for American Students of Minority and Heritage Communities in April, bringing the total number of scholarship recipients to 481 since the program began in 2008. The program benefits American students of African, Armenian, Bosnian, Filipino, Hispanic, Macedonian, and Native American heritage. Scholarships are awarded to eligible undergraduate and graduate students who have been accepted to a university study abroad or language program in Turkey, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), or Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). Students who received scholarship in April attend Valdosta State University, UCLA, the University of Michigan, Saint Louis University, the University of Alabama, and the University of Missouri-Columbia, and will be studying abroad at Yeditepe and Bogazici Universities in Istanbul and the American University of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo, BiH.

TCA Awards 2016 Study Tour Grant

TCA has awarded a $9,000 TCA Study Tour Grant to the University of Wyoming’s program “Summer in Turkey: A Creative Journey through Anatolia.” The grant will benefit 9 students. The TCA Study Tour grant program supports educational faculty-led tours to Turkey and provides an incentive for institutions to choose Turkey as a study tour destination. In total, the TCA Study Tour Grant program has benefitted 281 students through 25 grants since the program’s inception in 2011.
